In the UK, EV chargers come in two main types:
3-pin plug chargers (slow): These use a standard UK 230V socket but charge very slowly (2-3kW), taking 24+ hours for a full charge.
Dedicated chargers (fast): Most chargers are 7kW and can charge an EV in 4-8 hours. More powerful 22kW chargers are available but require a three-phase electrical supply, which most UK properties don’t have.
The cost of installing a 7kW charger typically ranges from £800 to £1,500, including installation. Prices vary depending on the charger model and whether any electrical upgrades are needed. If your property requires a new fuse box or extra wiring, costs may be higher. Some residents may be eligible for the EV chargepoint grant, which provides up to £350 off installation costs if you meet certain criteria.
Most EVs use the Type 2 connector, which is the standard for home and public charging. This means that almost all 7kW chargers will work with any UK EV. However, some older EVs (certain Nissan Leaf models) use the CHAdeMO connector for rapid charging, so checking your vehicle’s charging port is important. If you drive a Tesla, you can use both Tesla Superchargers and standard Type 2 chargers with an adapter.
Most people charge overnight using a smart charger with off-peak electricity rates to save money. But charging time depends on the battery size and charger power.
3-pin plug charging (2.3kW): Can take 24-36 hours for a full charge, making it impractical for daily use.
7kW charger: Adds 25-30 miles per hour and fully charges most EVs in 6-8 hours.
22kW charger (three-phase power required): Charges in 3-4 hours but may not be compatible with most UK properties.
EV chargers are fully weatherproof and designed to work in the UK’s rainy climate, meeting strict IP ratings (Ingress Protection) to ensure safety in wet conditions. However, it’s essential to install a weather-resistant unit if your charger is outdoors. Some units come with built-in covers or you can fit a protective enclosure. Always check that your cables and sockets are dry before plugging in to prevent unnecessary wear and tear.
Charging does increase electricity usage, but it’s usually cheaper than petrol or diesel, although the cost typically depends on your tariff.
The average UK electricity rate is 28p per kWh (as of 2024). Charging a 60kWh battery from empty to full would cost about £16.80, giving 200-300 miles of range.
Many energy providers offer EV-friendly tariffs, such as Octopus Go or OVO Charge Anytime, which provide lower overnight rates (as low as 7p per kWh), reducing costs to £4-5 per full charge.
Using a smart charger can help schedule charging during off-peak hours to further cut costs.
